Sportsman’s Dinner nets windfall for Memorial Fund

March 5, 2017

A packed crowd for the Sportsman’s Dinner

Saturday 4th March saw a sell-out crowd at Dunfermline’s Garvock House Hotel, for the 2017 Sportsman’s Dinner, hosted by the 1885 Dunfermline Athletic Business Club.

Peter Brown & Alex McLeish

The crowd were treated to a tremendous evening, with a three course meal and fabulous entertainment, as well as personal appearances from former Scotland boss Alex McLeish, and popular after-dinner speaker Peter Brown.

Jim Leishman performed his usual wonders during the auction, and this resulted in significant monies being raised for the Pars Supporters Trust, and more specifically, the Margaret Ross Memorial Fund.

On the day of Margaret’s funeral, the PST received an anonymous donation of an authentic, signed and framed Wayne Rooney 2016/17 Manchester United home shirt (see below).

Wayne Rooney’s Signed Shirt

The only condition of the donation was that all monies raised from it had to go to the PST.  The Board of the PST discussed various methods of using the donation to raise money, and were very grateful to DAFC Director Billy Braisby, when he offered to include it as an item for auction at the Sportsman’s Dinner.  Thanks to Jim’s encouragement on the evening, and some tenacious bidding, a winning bid of £600 secured the prize.  Given that Rooney is now both England and Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer, this is a great collectable.

In February, we told you about the creation of the Margaret Ross Memorial Fund, as a lasting tribute to our friend, and founder member of the PST, who passed away suddenly in December 2016.  It was decided then, that all proceeds from the auction of the signed shirt should go towards this fund.  As well as the signed Wayne Rooney shirt, a hospitality package donated by our friends at Kelty Hearts was also up for grabs – the successful bid of £300 has also been nominated for donation to the Margaret Ross Memorial Funds.  We would like to take this opportunity to record our thanks to the prize donors, all the organisers of the Sportsman’s Dinner, and of course the successful bidders.

It is the intention of the PST Board that we will commit £1,000 each year towards a promising young talent, with a view to supporting their development.  This year, we have been delighted to contribute towards the cost of 17-year old Pars starlet Paul Allan attending a 4-week training camp at Benfica’s academy in Portugal.

Key initiatives such as this as only possible thanks to the continued generosity of the whole Pars Family, but in particular you, the PST membership.  As well as renewing your PST membership for 2017 now, you can also if you wish, donate directly to the Margaret Ross Memorial Fund using the button below.
